BAR HARBOR — More than 400 runners will take their marks on the morning of Saturday, Sept. 17, for the 39th Annual Bar Harbor Bank & Trust Half Marathon and Fall 5K.

This run, and the Mount Desert Island YMCA’s June half marathon, are the only half marathons in the country that feature part of the course in a national park.

“It’s the 39th annual [half marathon], and because it is the park’s centennial year, we are recognizing that,” said YMCA Healthy Living Director Lindsey Doyle, who also acts as race director.

The event is the YMCA’s largest fundraiser of the year. All proceeds will go towards advancing the Y’s programming.

The half marathon course will take runners from downtown Bar Harbor, up West Street Extension to Duck Brook Bridge, around Eagle Lake back along Route 233, through the Kebo Valley Golf Course on the Cromwell Harbor Road and ultimately to the finish line near the Bar Harbor Athletic Fields.

Finishers will refuel with giant subs donated by Subway and treats donated by MDI Ice Cream. Hannaford also will provide some snacks.

“Jeff Dobbs will be commentating as runners cross the finish line, so that will be something new for this year,” Doyle said.

Awards will be given to the first three overall men’s and women’s finishers, and first and second place in each age group also will get awards.

While the half marathon race has reached its maximum capacity of 400 runners, 5K race registration is open until the morning of the race.

The 5K registration fee is $25. That race will begin at 8 a.m. in front of China Joy on Main St.
